Moral Foundations for a Free Market Economy
Presented by Dr. David W. Miller
With Special Guest Dr. John Huffman
What can constrain our self-interest and greed? The headlines blame “greed” for the worldwide economic crisis, but greed is nothing new. The real failure lies deeper, in our growing disconnect between moral and economic concerns.
Many people know Adam Smith as the economic genius whose 1776 Wealth of Nations helped us see the potential of the free market system. But his famous “invisible hand” actually appears first in The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759, 1790), which Smith considered his best and most important work.
Please note: Regrettably, Bill Pollard cannot attend due to medical travel restrictions. David Miller, a protégé of Bill Pollard, has kindly agreed to meet with us on his behalf.

Dr. Dallas Willard of USC will return to facilitate this very special program; the final three chapters of Entrepreneurs of Life: Faith and the Venture of Purposeful Living, a study program created by Dr. Os Guinness.
This session will explore some of the tests and trials of living life as an entrepreneurial calling. Included are such stirring stories as Beethoven battling with deafness and Magellan succumbing to hubris after his epic round-the-world journey. We will also explore Tolstoy’s much-loved story of “Two Old Men,” which brings us to appraise our character and priorities in life. We will conclude with a discussion of “finishing well” in life’s journey. For followers of the call, life is an entrepreneurial venture to the end and the challenge is plain: to finish strong and well.
We will also have a movie screening of: The Call of the Entrepreneur, which tells the story of three entrepreneurs: a failing dairy farmer in rural Evart, Michigan; a merchant banker in New York City; and a refugee from Communist China.
